GEAR UP for Volunteers -- You Can Help!
Volunteers Make a Difference
GEAR UP is a college readiness program serving over 800 young people who are at a critical stage of life. The decisions they make in the next few years will shape, and in some cases, determine their futures. Questions such as whether to take easy or challenging courses in high school; what to do in the afternoons after school; how to spend (or save) spare money; and how to respond to peer pressure take on incredible significance in a young person's life when we realize how directly the future is built upon the past. Volunteers can have a life-changing impact on young people by providing guidance, friendship, and practical advice and help. Most important, volunteers influence young people by serving as a steady source of belief in each person's best self.
Volunteer Opportunities
GEAR UP offers many opportunities for helping. Volunteers may work directly with the school-based GEAR UP team to make a plan, or they can sign up through one of the GEAR UP partner organizations. The suggestions here are based on type of activity. Potential volunteers who don't see what they are looking for are welcome to contact the GEAR UP Dr. Eugenia Bas-Isaac, GEAR UP Director to discuss their ideas.
Tutoring/Mentoring
Volunteers are needed to meet with individual students or small groups of students to tutor/mentor in math, English, science, or other topics. This takes place at school on week days (arranged through the GEAR UP staff at the school). For more information, contact Dr. Eugenia Bas-Isaac, GEAR UP Director.
Sharing Career Information
To speak at a career fair, guest lecture to a class, host a field trip or job shadowing experience at your workplace, or host an internship, contact Dr. Eugenia Bas-Isaac, GEAR UP Director.
