GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. GEAR UP grants awarded across the United States fund college readiness activities designed to help secondary school students stay in school, graduate from high school, and enter college, university, or other postsecondary programs. GEAR UP consists of an academic course on college and career exploration; articulation activities such as advising and campus tours to smooth the transitions of middle school to high school and high school to college; work-based learning such as field trips, job shadowing, and internships; summer enrichment academies; parent workshops; and teacher professional development.
